Meet some of our nannies

  • I had previously worked for various companies in office-based accounts roles and decided it was time for a complete change, and hopefully, a more rewarding role. I have always enjoyed chatting with people and helped to care for my mum who had dementia and arthritis.

When I met Mandy at the N4G office we had a long discussion, and I realised this role would be perfect.

Since joining in November 23 I have met some lovely clients, all with different needs, which makes each day very interesting. I feel that many of the clients have become friends as I see them most days and we have built up good relationships. They are always very appreciative of everything we do, and it really is a very rewarding job.

  • Feeling lost and unsure of what to do next – yet knowing I wanted to do something more rewarding, to feel like I’d made a difference at the end of the day and hopefully allow me to stay based in Harpenden. I spoke to a friend at work about maybe changing careers and going into care support work. Then in my words, “FATE” brought this job to me. My friend’s dad (such a small world) had nannies to support him in his home and recommended me.

I had some hands-on experience with Dementia as I helped support family with my Great Uncle and Auntie after they were both sadly diagnosed – little parts of this have helped support me through my job.

Best move I made – I absolutely love my job being a nannie, I have the pleasure of meeting amazing people, and their families, and building lovely relationships. The role covers so many different aspects from reassurance to a simple hug, talking – which I love to do, and having a giggle, helping support with interests and hobbies and supporting them to live independently in their own home. Every day is different from pure companionship to going out for a walk or coffee, supporting and taking to appointments, cooking and cleaning.

It’s so lovely to see faces light up when you arrive – I’m just as pleased to see them and rewarding knowing you’ve already made a difference to their day. It’s like having an extended family, and I treat every visit/client how I’d like a member of my family to be treated.

I first met Mrs L on joining the company, after some time getting to know one another, it was so lovely to see how a bond developed in a short time. We have really gotten to know one another, and whenever I turn up, she says oh I’m glad it’s you, which warms my heart. We have built such a lovely friendship, and she now laughs about the things that would have caused her undue stress.

It’s such an honour being a nannie, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a caring team.

  • Hello, my name is Claire.

I have mainly worked in childcare throughout my career, but I wanted to start going down a different career path. I decided to start working with older people because I love to be helpful and make a difference in people’s lives.

I often call it Grannies 4 Nannies instead of Nannies 4 Grannies because I think it goes both ways. I really enjoy spending time with clients and knowing that for the time I was with them it brightened their day.

I find it very interesting finding out about the lives they have lead. I miss having Grandparents and a father, so I get a lot out of my visits as well. I was offered training, which was very good and I find it a very rewarding job knowing I have helped different clients in a lot of different ways.

  • I was born in Harpenden and worked for Boots the Chemists in the village as a Healthcare Assistant for many years and later as a Receptionist for a corporate company. In both roles I enjoyed meeting people.

I had always been keen to volunteer or support children and young people in some way and in 2022 the opportunity arose within the team at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice.

I had heard of Nannies 4 Grannies and decided to contact them. When I met Kay at N4G I knew this would be an ideal part time role alongside my volunteer work. I feel supported in my role and enjoy being part of the team. It is great meeting so many people and their families. I have been with N4G for almost 2 years and really enjoy the job as I love helping and supporting the clients who are always appreciative as are their families.

There are moments with clients that stay with you always, even in the saddest of situations the clients can bring so much joy and I feel they give so much in return, listening to someone recite a poem, joining a dementia client doing his yoga App and seeing how he responded was amazing and sharing a special birthday with a dementia client and her husband and the other nannies caring for her was very special.

In my free time I enjoy walking, cycling, yoga and this year have started tap dancing for fun and fitness.

  • I Joined Nannies4grannies in March 2019. I had spent the previous few years bringing up my children but felt it was time to get back into work.

I contacted nannies4grannies to see if there were any vacancies, so I went along and met Kay for a chat and was lucky enough to be taken on.

I absolutely love my job and working as part of such a wonderful team. I have got to meet a variety of people over the past 5 years and with many of my regular clients I feel more like I’m visiting a friend than a client. Sometimes it’s to help with light housework or preparing a meal, taking to appointments, shopping or simply just being there to have a chat and a coffee and companionship.

I have been visiting Mrs M regularly over the last 5 years and knowing what a difference my visits make to her life is so rewarding. Helping to do chores around her home that she is no longer able to do on her own and being there for her to talk too and just a shoulder to lean on when needed is an absolute privilege.

I feel blessed to work with such a wonderful team of Nannie’s in a job I love.

  • When I joined Nannies 4 Grannies in January 2017, I had come from a large Japanese Corporate company which I had been at for 30 years.

I had worked in an NHS environment before this, with British Nursing Association, so was aware of all aspects of care and I had enjoyed it.

I had also cared for parents and then a very poorly aunt, so I knew what to expect, or I thought I did.

It all seemed very easy at N4G.. a little light housework /companionship, shopping, taking to the hospital or doctor’s appointment and even coffee at local garden centres, with no personal care.

How far from the facts could that last statement be – ‘no personal care’. This has transpired to be the most rewarding and wonderful experience of my working life. It is ‘personal care’ at the highest and most personal level.

I joined when life was normal and there was no masks and distancing, so when one of your lovely clients was in need of comfort or a hand holding moment, you could oblige with no rule breaking.

Just before Christmas 2018 one lovely couple that I had supported from joining N4G had to go into a home, they were dedicated to each other, Mr B suffered from Parkinson’s and Mrs B had dementia and later was diagnosed with lung cancer, they stayed at home for as long as possible with our support. I had attended all Mrs B’s hospital appointments with her right to the terminal diagnosis, she was very important to me as she was to Mr B who was immobile and could not come.

The morning Mrs B left us, I was with her to hold her hand, it was an honour and a great comfort to Mr B that I was with her when he couldn’t be.

This was just one example of the relationships I have built with clients and their families; it has been a real honour to share a part of their lives and be with them toward the end offering the ultimate in ‘personal care’.

Covid was a special time for me when we suddenly became the only family some of our wonderful ladies and gents had, working 7 days a week keeping them safe, cooking meals, being their only contact with the outside world. I felt very scared the first morning stepping out and being the only car on the road for most of the journey and those first trips to the shops getting 3 different people’s groceries was very strange.

It was so rewarding and made you feel proud at the end of it all when the families said, ‘we do not know how we would have got through this without Nannies 4 Grannies.’

I have never worked with such a caring group of people; it is hard to believe it is a business.

No one group of people could be more vocational and loving. I’m really proud to call myself a Nannies 4 Grannies member of Staff.

  • I worked as a midwife for many years, and took a career break to care for my mother, who had Parkinson’s and dementia.

After mum passed away, I went on to care for my dad, until he, too, passed in 2021.

Suddenly I felt I’d lost my sense of purpose. I wanted to return to the workforce, but midwifery would have meant months of retraining. I knew I was good at caring for people, but I’d had enough of wiping bottoms! (Can I say that?!)

Someone suggested Nannies 4 Grannies, they’re unique in that they offer companionship and taking people out, as well as the more basic tasks like shopping, cooking and cleaning. I called them up, and here I am, 3 years later, part of the team!

It’s a brilliant job. It can sometimes seem like hard work when you’re rushing around shopping on a hot day, but other times, sitting having a cup of tea and a chat hardly seems like working does it!

When I’m not working, I’m generally caring for my crew of disabled wild hedgehogs. As a long time volunteer for London Colney Hedgehog Rescue, I’ve had many prickly customers pass through my hands!

  • Before my previous role, I was a carer in the community for over 8 years. During this time, I supported both young and older adults with varied health conditions, as well as supporting people with dementia.

My previous role was as a personal assistant to a family for 15 years; the last 6 months of which was as a live-in carer. When this sadly ended, a friend of mine suggested contacting Nannies4Grannies as one of her friends had them in every day for companionship.

I contacted Kay, and we had a wonderful chat about what N4G did and how this aligned with what I was experienced in and was looking to continue. I was so happy when Kay confirmed that I had become a nanny!

I have always enjoyed working with people and going that extra mile. I get great satisfaction knowing that I have managed to help someone enjoy their day, whether it is by having a chat and a cuppa, cooking a meal, or accompanying them on an outing.

I am fortunate to be working with a great team of nannies and to be supported by the admin staff who are there to advise and assist when needed. I have been working with N4G for two years now and I am still loving every day.

Meet our management team

  • Shelley and I started our journey with Nannies 4 Grannies nearly 12 years ago. The idea and name were entirely hers, but she didn’t have the time to commit. One night, over a glass of wine, she suggested it to me. At the time, I was working with vulnerable young adults in college, which I loved, but I was ready for a change—so I grabbed the challenge with both hands.

Nannies 4 Grannies grew slowly at first. It took time to build a positive reputation that would carry us forward. Employing the right team—and looking after them—has always been key to our success.

My dad didn’t like the name Nannies 4 Grannies. He told me I should think of something different. I’ve also heard that some people are put off by the name, but it says exactly what we do. Like it or not, people remember it—and they know who to call!

  • Having spent over 30 years in recruitment working within operations and corporate account management, I reached a stage in my life where priorities both personally and professionally needed to change, and I took the leap of faith to step away from the only career I had ever really known.

Whilst taking time out, I was aware of the good work Nannies4Grannies did within the community and decided to approach them for part time work as a Nanny. My first conversation with Kay quickly led to being offered the opportunity to join her in the office – that was 6 years ago, and even with the covid pandemic to grapple with in my first 6 months, I have genuinely never looked back!

For the first few years, my role was multi-functional from assessing client needs, recruitment & staffing and the all-important matching of clients to nannies.  Growing the team in 2023 gave us the opportunity to redefine responsibilities so that clients and staff alike had the best levels of support, and my role now focuses on managing the recruitment, staffing and scheduling aspects of our business.

My only regret? – That I wasn’t brave enough to follow my heart and take the plunge sooner into such a rewarding and meaningful role.  I am very proud to say I am part of an organisation that makes a difference to the lives of our elderly community each and every day.

  • After living in Northern Cyprus for 10 years, I returned to the UK in 2019 so that I could continue my profession in boarding. I was very fortunate to secure a position within the boy’s boarding community at St George’s School here in Harpenden and spent a very busy five years developing programmes and promoting a positive boarding culture.

During my free time I volunteered at The Memory Café held at The Salvation Army halls and this is where I was first introduced to N4G.

I knew then and there that this would be something that I would love to be involved in and was thrilled when the Office Manager position became available. I joined the team in 2023 and even though I have only been with N4G for a short while, I know that I will be here for a long time to come!

I feel honoured to be part of a team of people who make such a positive impact and enable older adults to enjoy their lives to the fullest.

  • I’ve spent many years supporting older people and their families, offering not just practical help but genuine care and companionship. My experience in dementia care, stroke recovery, and community wellbeing has taught me the importance of kindness, patience, and helping people feel valued and independent at every stage of life.
